Event Description

How produce growers handle their product affects the post-harvest quality and safety of produce, as well as growers’ relationships with their buyers. Integrating food safety systems into postharvest practices supports the development of farm systems that are viable, cost-effective, and scale appropriate. Every farm is different, and buyers increasingly expect farmers to be proactive about the safety of the produce they sell.

Join the CCOF Foundation and FamilyFarmed for an introductory, hands-on food safety workshop for produce growers. Guided by workshop instructor and organic farmer Atina Diffley, workshop participants will 

  • develop food-safety action plans for their farms;
  • conduct classroom-based risk assessments;
  • develop record keeping/traceability systems that align with farm work, support decision-making, and maximize profitability, while also meeting food safety requirements;
  • understand how the new FSMA regulations impact their farming operations; and
  • address food safety topics specifically relevant to organic growers.

These workshops are ideal for organic and non-organic, small to midsized produce growers that sell directly to consumers, restaurants, or local retail outlets. Participants should bring maps of their farms to facilitate the development of their action plan.

Workshops will be held in the Sacramento, San Diego, and Chico regions of California. For Northern California growers interested in learning more about selling produce to the wholesale market, join the North Valley Food Hub for a Wholesale Success Workshop the day after the Chico Food Safety Workshop.
